Obituary for Bernice C. Fowlkes
Deaconess Bernice Elizabeth Campbell Fowlkes was born on May 21, 1940 in Nottoway County, Virginia, to the late Mr. Mosby "Buck" Campbell and Mrs. Alma C. Tucker. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Deacon Alvin C. Fowlkes, Sr.
She was educated in the Nottoway County School system, an alumna of Luther H. Foster High School. On November 9, 1963, she married the love of her life, whom she affectionately referred to as "Nut". To this union, they were blessed with five children.
This faithful servant became a member of Mt. Nebo in September of 1952, at the age of 12. She was a member of the Deaconess Ministry. She was Assistant Financial Secretary, then Financial Secretary for many years. She became the Church Clerk in April 1980, retiring January 2014, after 34 years of dedicated service. She was past secretary of the Young Couples Club. Deaconess Fowlkes was past Supervisor of the Young Adult Choir and past Treasurer of the Youth Department. She was an active member of the Adult Sunday School Class and member of the Senior Choir for 51 years. Before becoming a stay-at-home mom, her early employment included The Grove Drive-In and the Crewe Laundry, where she made many life long friends. She devoted her life to raising her family and she enjoyed babysitting for many families over the years, in 1995 she began working in the food service industry at Fort Pickett for 19 years.
Her favorite color is "red" and favorite scripture is Philippians 4:13 – I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. (KJV)
She leaves to cherish her memories: her five children, Mrs. Brenda C. White (Barry), Mr. Alvin C. Fowlkes, Jr. and Ms. Angela M. Fowlkes, all of Chesterfield, Virginia; Ms. LaCriscia M. Fowlkes of Miami, Florida, and Ms. LaTiscia P. Fowlkes of Richmond, Virginia; one Grandson, Barry “BJ” L. White Jr.; two sisters, Mazie C. Webb of Blackstone, Virginia and Linda D. Campbell of Baltimore, Maryland; four brothers, Richard Campbell (Mildred) and MacArthur Campbell of Richmond, Virginia; George Campbell of Sterling, Virginia; and Charlie Campbell (Ruth) of Clinton, Maryland; sisters-in-law Roberta Taylor of Burkeville, VA and Irene Fowlkes of Blackstone, VA; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and dear friends.
Funeral Service for Mrs. Bernice C. Fowlkes will be Saturday, March 26, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church, Blackstone with interment in the church cemetery.
