Early on Sunday morning, April 28, 2024, Benjamin Franklin Stokes crossed from earthly to eternal life at the blessed age of 87.
Known by his middle name, Franklin was born and raised in Blackstone, Virginia. He was the eldest son of Maria Stokes and grandson of Herman and Effie Stokes. Because of the very large tract of land (in town) that his great-grandfather owned over a century ago, Stokes Street is named for the family.
Franklin was educated in public schools in Blackstone. His family belonged to Shiloh Baptist Church.
In adulthood, Franklin relocated to Richmond, Virginia. He genuinely loved to work and was always dedicated. As a talented chef, he particularly loved to bake. His cakes and pies were legendary.
Throughout his life, Franklin was loving, kind, considerate, and a well-wisher. His happy smile brightened and disarmed everybody. He was a delight to be around and never found fault in anyone. He regularly checked on family and friends; they were blessed to receive his calls.
Due to illness, Franklin spent his last 2½ years in suburban Maryland with his loving brother Clinton (“Clint”) and sister-in-law Laura.
Franklin will be missed by all who were fortunate to know him. He is survived by his brothers Clint Stokes (Laura) and Herman Theophilus “Tweeter” Stokes; nephews Reginald Stokes and Herman “Little T” Stokes Jr.; nieces Yolanda Stokes and Samantha Pittman; cousins Roland Stokes Jr., Thelma Stokes Johnson, Benjamin “B.J.” Stokes Jr., and Kathleen Stokes; Mary Coleman and family; Terry Lee and family; Diane Britt and family; and other dear relatives and friends.
