Obituary for Anthony B. Ashe
Anthony Bland Ashe, age 61, died on November 4th, 2020, in Durham, NC surrounded by members of his immediate family, as a result of pancreatic cancer related to his heroic work as a first responder following the attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.
Anthony is survived by his wife of many years, Mary Vergara Ashe; his children, Anthony Ashe (Angela), Aaron Ashe (Tiffany), Abraheem Ashe (Tabatha), and Austin Ashe (Karoline); his grandchildren, Anthony, Abraheem, Allen, Aaron, Aidan, and Ace; his brother Eugene Ashe(Nancy); his nephew Alex Ashe; and many other cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends.
Anthony was born on January 17th, 1959 in Harlem, NYC to parents Dolores E. Ashe and Virginius S. Ashe Jr. He graduated from Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY with a degree in English Literature. After college, he accepted a position as a New York State Police Officer, where he worked for more than 20 years. After retiring from the NYS Police he went on to work as a teacher and administrator for many years at Rice High School in his childhood neighborhood of Harlem, NY until the school’s closing in 2011 when he decided to enjoy retirement and move to his final home in Crewe, VA.
There will be a viewing on Friday, November 13th, 2020 from 11am to 7pm at Hawkes Funeral Home (504 East St, Blackstone, VA 23824).
