Obituary for Annie Mae Mayo
On February 16, 2022, surrounded by love, Annie Mae Mayo entered into the rest of God. Annie was born September 7, 1926 in Powhatan, VA to the late Freeman and Ida Redd Scruggs. In the large family of ten, Annie was the second oldest daughter. Annie’s life quietly reflected her faith and trust in the Lord. She was a longtime member of Hollywood Baptist Church, Powhatan, VA, where she served as an usher for many years. Annie worked as a custodian for the Powhatan County Public Schools from 1979-1988. Later, she gladly worked cleaning many homes and helping to raise the children of those families. The children still praise her to this day. Annie took pride in making sure the homes she worked for and her very own was orderly - everything was in its place.
Annie always talked about the love of her life John Louis Mayo. She affectionately called him “Daddy”. The lovebirds were married in 1949. Upon his death, Annie often talked about missing and wanting to be with John. Annie loved her soap operas, The Bold and The Beautiful and One Life to Live. She did not want to be disturbed when her stories were on the television. She would be content watching her stories eating Doritos, Cheese Doodles and drinking soda. Annie also enjoyed antique shopping and going to flea markets with her sisters. Her favorite pastimes were playing the pick it numbers, reading the Bible, African-American history and leaving food for the cats at her trailer home in the country.
Annie was preceded in death by her husband John L. Mayo, her siblings Lillia (William) Tucker, Willie “Buck” (Mary) Scruggs, Freeman “Bubba” (Irene) Scruggs, Allen (Emily) Scruggs, William “Henry” (Chaney) Scruggs, Lillie (Waverly Sr.) Epps, Franklin (Elizabeth) Scruggs, Martha (Kermit brother-in-law Clements) and Kelso Scruggs.
Fond memories and good times will be cherished by all, cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces and grand nephews, God-Daughter Rita Stovall, faithful nephews Waverly Jr. and Kenneth Scuggs, Markee Savoy, dedicated nieces Sandra Matlock and Demetria Garden.
Graveside Services were held Tuesday, February 22, 2022 at 1:00PM at Hollywood Baptist Church, Powhatan, VA.
