Obituary for Annie H. Claiborne
ANNIE HAWKES CLAIBORNE a resident of Dinwiddie County, departed this life early Friday morning at Southside Regional Hospital, Petersburg, Virginia after an extended illness.
She was born on January 23, 1928 to Johnny and Frenchie Hawkes of Earls, Virginia, they both preceded her in death. She was educated in the Nottoway County School System. Annie was married to Orphan Claiborne for fifty-one years and they were the parents of two sons that they loved dearly.
Annie joined the Manassas Hill Baptist Church during her youth and later she transferred her membership with her husband to Poplar Lawn Baptist Church. She enjoyed attending church faithfully until her health started deteriorating. For many years, she serves as Treasurer of the Pastor’s Aide, member of the Missionary and Women Ministry. Although she was not very talkative, she kept a pleasant smile and tried to assist whenever needed. Prior to her decline in health, she was always seated in the same location in church where she proudly wore her fashionable hats.
Annie was employed for numerous years at Mercury Cleaners in Blackstone where she enjoyed talking to customers until her retirement. She was a lifelong member in the community of the Jolly Social Club and she enjoyed throughout the years gathering with the ladies in their homes. Some of her most memorable hobbies were: attending community baseball games, playing cards and solving cross word puzzles.
Preceding her in death were many relatives: her husband, Orphan Claiborne; a son, Melvin Claiborne; four brothers and there sisters.
Cherishing her fondest memories are: her son, Howard (Leon) and wife Judy Claiborne; daughter-in-law, Beverly Claiborne; granddaughter, Samira and husband Christopher Willis; grandsons, Maurice and Melvin Claiborne; sisters-in-law, Dollie Claiborne, Ethel Jordan, Georgia Evans (Wesley) and Velma Hawkes; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a special friend, Evelyn Johnson.
