Obituary for Annie F. Smith
Annie Virginia Fitzgerald departed this life on Thursday, August 7, 2008 at 10:40 P.M. in Richmond, VA at the home of her daughter.  The fifth of twelve children, she was born on November 13, 1925, to the late Henry C. and Mary S. Fitzgerald in Nottoway County, VA.
She graduated from Nottoway Training School and attended Hampton School of Nursing.  She married the late William L. Smith, Sr. and moved to his home in Charleston, SC.  Their union produced two children, a son, the late William, Jr. and a daughter, Susan.  After the death of her spouse in 1951, Annie returned to Blackstone to be near her family, where she was blessed with a second son, Kenneth, in 1962.  She attended Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church until illness restricted her outings.
Affectionately known by her siblings as "Little Bit", Annie was frequently the caregiver for various family members.  She loved children and welcomed family and friends to her home with kindness and good food.
Annie was preceded in death by her parents, husband, oldest son, and five brothers.  Loving memories will be cherished by her remaining family:  daughter, Susan S. Hawkes; son, Kenneth W. Smith (Ayesha); granddaughters, Janine Hawkes Britt (Duane) and Sonya Smith (Shamecka); great granddaughters, Emoni Lewis and Kameron Britt; sisters, Dollie Stith, Mary B.
