Obituary for Ann E. Neal
Ann Elizabeth Neal was born on November 23, 1940. Her Mother, Alice Bland Snell, often says that she was a gorgeous sandy hair baby girl. Ann received her education in the Nottoway County school system, graduating from Luther H. Foster (“Nottoway”) High School in 1960.
Ann often said she had 3 mothers: Alice; her late Grandmother, Sudeany Bland; and her late Aunt, Rosetta “Ladybug” Pitts. She grew up with her immediate and extended family in a household full of love and playing with her cousins who all lived nearby on the family land. While she is an only child, she was fortunate to grow up with her first cousins, Aubrey Pitts and Thelma Pitts Tucker, who were the closest to siblings that she had. She attended Hickory Grove Baptist Church with her family until it was destroyed in a fire, at which time, the family faithfully attended Union Baptist Church. After high school, Ann went to New York to join her parents, Norman and Alice, where she furthered her college education and worked in the business office of Klein’s Department Store.
While in high school, she met and began to date Dexter Neal. In 1967, they married in Blackstone, VA and began their new life in Washington, DC. Soon thereafter, they had their baby girl, Kim. Ann then began to work in the business office of Woodward & Lothrop (“Woodies”), where she began and excelled in her career in business management. After fifteen years of employment at Woodies, she went on to further her career at the National Academy of Sciences, where she proudly worked for twenty-six years until her health began to fail her in 2009. In 2010, she officially retired, and it was at that point, she began to travel more with her daughter, spend more time with her parents while taking care of her health. She also loved decorating her homes in Washington DC and Crewe, VA.
Ann loved to work on projects and challenging tasks. She also loved to shop and had an eye for style as well as interior decorating that many admired. She was a very quiet angel, who many times put others’ interests before her own. She was always concerned about the well being of her family and was constantly giving until her death. She absolutely loved children. While Ann’s death was a great shock to us all, know that she went peacefully and in God’s hands. Ann was a true caregiver, and because of that, we know that she will continue to watch over her family in good and bad times.
Ann departed this life on Friday, September 21, 2012 at her parents’ home in Crewe, VA. She had remained in Crewe to assist her mother after her father’s funeral on September 1, 2012. Left to cherish her memories are her Mother, Alice Snell; her Daughter, Kim Neal; her Husband, Dexter Neal; one Aunt, Daisy Ford (Louis); her closest cousins, Aubrey Pitts (Virginia) and Thelma Tucker (William Sr.); one sister-in-law, Beverly Dorsey; her godson, William Tucker, Jr. and many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
Funeral Services Wednesday, September 26, 2012 @ 1:00 p.m. at Union Baptist Church, Crewe with interment in the Crewe Cemetery, Crewe.
W.E. Hawkes & Son Funeral Home of Blackstone in charge of the arrangements.
