Obituary for Alvin C. Fowlkes, Sr.
DEACON ALVIN CLINTON FOWLKES, SR., (affectionately known as Tut, Nut, Pork Chop and TW) departed this life on July 1, 2010 at Henrico Doctor’s Hospital, Richmond, VA. He was born on March 4, 1943 in Nottoway County.
He graduated from Luther H. Foster High School in 1963. He was baptized at Yielding Zion Baptist Church, Burkeville, VA at an early age. He joined Mount Nebo Baptist Church on February 3, 1971.
He was Chairman of the Deacon Ministry, member of the Trustee Ministry and Treasurer of Mount Nebo Baptist Church. Deacon Fowlkes served as President of the Couples’ Club, Cemetery Caretaker and Church Sexton; he was the Adult Sunday School Teacher and the Superintendent of the Mount Nebo Sunday School Ministry for over 30 years. He also served as the Annual Committee Chairman of the Poplar Lawn Sunday School Union.
Alvin worked at Ken Lee (Kenbridge, VA), Burkeville Veneer Plant (Burkeville, VA), Town of Blackstone, Hardwood Furniture (Blackstone, VA) and retired after 21 ½ years as a Correctional Officer with the Department of Corrections, Nottoway Correctional Center. He was also an entrepreneur; turning his love of cutting grass and grooming yards in the community, into a flourishing small business.
On November 9, 1963, he married Bernice Campbell, to this union they were blessed with five children.
He leaves to cherish precious memories his wife of 46 years, Bernice Campbell Fowlkes, his children Brenda White (Barry); Alvin “Clint” Fowlkes, Jr.; Angela Fowlkes of Chesterfield, VA; LaCriscia Fowlkes of Miami, FL; and LaTiscia Fowlkes of Richmond, VA; one grandson, Barry L. White Jr.; one devoted sister, Janet Roberta Taylor.
Mother-in-law Alma C. Tucker of Blackstone, VA; Sisters-in-law Mazie C. Webb of Blackstone, VA; Linda Campbell of Baltimore, MD; and Irene Fowlkes of Blackstone, VA. Brothers-in-law Richard Campbell (Mildred) of Richmond, VA; MacArther Campbell (Linda) of Richmond, VA; George Campbell (Louise) of Sterling, VA; Charlie Campbell (Ruth) of Clinton, MD.
Nieces and nephews, Thelma Johnson, Mary Fowlkes, Madeline Jackson, Tonya Taylor, Alvin Witcher, Benjamin Witcher, Leon Branch and Calvin Fowlkes. He also leaves a multitude of loved ones who revered him as a father, grandfather, uncle and great uncle, proving that one man’s heart is big enough to love an entire community.
Funeral Services Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at 12:00 noon at Mount Nebo Baptist Church, Blackstone with interment in the church cemetery.
