Obituary for Alphonso Leroy Booker, Sr.
Minister Alphonso Leroy Booker, Sr., peacefully entered into eternal rest on April 14, 2019 in McGuire Hospital, Richmond, VA. Minister Booker was born in Nottoway County, VA on August 21, 1925 to his loving parents Mr. Benjamin and Bradia Booker. He graduated from Russell Grove High School and later attended St. Paul’s College.
Minister Booker served in the United States Air Force Army and was employed at Camp Pickett in Blackstone, VA. Later he became self-employed as an electronic technician and auto mechanic, teaching and servicing many local residents. Minister Booker joined Union Baptist Church at a young age and later received his license to minister from Minister’s for Christ Outreach.
Minister Booker loved all genres of music, played the guitar and harmonica. He also enjoyed reading, gardening and riding his bicycle well into his late 80’s with his grandchildren. His grandchildren were his pride and joy. He was a mentor and inspiration to many young men in the community especially to his younger cousin Christopher Hamlin who often sat and talked with him.
Minister Booker was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Benjamin Booker and George Booker; his daughter, Bradia Booker Johnson; sister, Mrs. Bernice Fields; grandson, Alexander Booker; son, Alphonso Booker, Jr.; and sister Mrs. Arethea Tucker.
Minister Booker leaves to celebrate his memory; his loving and devoted wife, Pastor Rose Booker, Amelia, VA; two sons, Alphonso Booker, III (Lola), La Plata, MD and Lafayette Booker (LaKeisha), Chesterfield, VA; one stepson Ronald Sweat, Mechanicsville, VA; one daughter, Fontaine Wallace, Pittsburg, PA; two stepdaughters, Carolyn White, Mechanicsville, VA and Karen Byrd (William), Petersburg, VA; one devoted sister, Mrs. Rena Brown, Blackstone, VA; on devoted niece, Dr. Carolyn M. Tucker Callaway (Theotis), Gainesville, FL; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral Services Saturday, April 20, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. at Union Baptist Church, Church Road, VA. Interment Monday, Virginia Veterans Cemetery, Amelia.
