Obituary for Allen James Baylor
ALLEN JAMES BAYLOR departed this life on Sunday, July 27, 2008 at Heritage Hall Health Care Center, Blackstone, VA. He was born on September 6, 1916, the oldest of five children born to Robert L. and Eleanor Ford Baylor. His parents and four siblings all preceded him in death.
At an early age he relocated to Nottoway County and attended Spainville School. Allen joined Jerusalem Baptist Church at an early age and was ordained as a deacon by the late Revered Judge Brown. He later moved his membership to Poplar Lawn Baptist Church to be with his wife. He served faithfully at both churches. Allen was well known in this and surrounding communities.
In 1941 he married Julia E. Pritchett. He served in the United States Navy. Allen moved to Maryland and was employed by Bethlehem Steel Plan, Sparrows Point, MD for approximately ten years. He later moved to New York City and worked in Danbury, CT as a butler for a Jewish family. Allen retired in 1972 after thirty years of employment with the United States Government at Ft. Belvoir, VA. After retiring, he was employed by MCV as the head of the power plant as a Steam Operating Engineer. His other jobs included becoming a Deputy Sheriff in Nottoway County, Police Officer in Burkeville, VA and his last place of employment was as a Security Officer at Piedmont Geriatric Hospital.
Allen joined the Prince Hall F&AM Lodge in Maryland and after coming back to Virginia he joined the Bethany Obadiah Lodge in Amelia, VA where he served as a Past Master. He has been a member for over seventy years. Allen was well known for doing burial ceremonies by memory.
He leaves to cherish his memories: a loving and dedicated wife of sixty-seven years, Julia E. Baylor, three sons, Shyrone, T. Anthony, and James Baylor all of Blackstone, VA; one granddaughter, LaTonya Brandon, two great grandsons, Joshua and Jeremiah Brandon all of Baltimore, MD; nieces and nephews; one sister-in-law Bridie Bowes of Richmond, VA. Allen had a special bond with Yvonne Parson Jackson of Teppe, AZ and Robert L. Baylor of Baltimore, MD; devoted friend, Barbara Tucker Jones; dedicated neighbors, Napoleon (Ninnie) and Frances Hawkes; and a long time friend George “Buck” Austin of Blackstone, VA.
Funeral Services Thursday, July 31, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Poplar Lawn Baptist Church, Blackstone, VA with interment in the church cemetery.
