Today we face one of God’s beautiful orchestrated moments, the transition of life. 2 Corinthians 5:8 says, we are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord. Our God with his infinite grace and love will give us the assurance that joy will come in the morning.
Alfred White, Jr. 73, of Blackstone, VA departed this life Monday, August 21, 2023 at Chippenham Levinson Heart Center with his wife at his side. He was born to the late Deacon Alfred White Sr. and Mary Fields White on August 22, 1949.
Affectionately known to many as “Sonny Boy”, “Bootleg White” and “Big Daddy White’ was born in Petersburg and raised in Blackstone, VA. A graduate of Luther H. Foster High School class of 1970.
Sonny was fortunate to retire from Phillip Morris USA, Inc. at the young age of 51 with 34 years of service in 2001.
Shortly thereafter he started servicing the community with establishing A. White Jr. Lawncare, while also claiming the title of CEO of his brother (Charles White Sr.) White’s Backhoe Services. Sonny loved gardening and harvesting his crop, cutting grass, dancing, grave digging and especially spending quality time with his family and friends.
He was an avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys Football Team. Serving others with a cheerful heart was his passion from volunteering at the Fort Pickett Food Bank sponsored by the Vietnam Veterans of America. Collecting groceries from local supermarkets and delivering to the food bank, then distributing food to our community elders, the sick and the shut-in. Mentoring the youth of the family and community who so deeply loved him for his mentorship. But most of all studying and knowing the word of God.
In the late 1970’s Alfred was the road manager for the Mighty Kings of Joy. Alfred joined the Jerusalem Baptist Church at an early age where he has served in multiple roles, Chairman of Trustee, member of Usher Board, Graveyard Committee and Groundsman.
One thing for certain and two things for sure, Sonny was a great provider and always put his family first with an unconditional love and balance. On September 14, 1974, Alfred Jr. united in holy matrimony with the love of his life Charlena (Pee-Wee) White and remained a team for 48 years.
Alfred White, Jr. was preceded in death by his parents the late Deacon Alfred White Sr. and Mary Fields White. Sister, Lois White Jennings, brother, George Dee White, grandson, Kiam White and best friend, Lloyd Clark.
