Obituary for Alease J. Hagwood
Alease Delphine Hagwood, daughter of the late Cyrus Johnson and Harriett B. Johnson was born August 26, 1933.  She departed this life on Monday, August 17, 2015.
At an early age she accepted Christ as her personal Savior and joined Liberty Baptist Church.  Alease attended public school in Amelia County and graduated from Russell Grove High School.  She later attended and graduated from Virginia Union University with a BS degree in education.
She moved to Martinsville, VA where she taught elementary school and married Stafford Hagwood, also a teacher at the time.  It is worth noting that back then, during segregation African-Americans filled in as guidance counselors for their black students, advising them long after they had moved on to higher grades.
In 1962 she gave birth to her son Roderick Stafford Hagwood.  On Christmas Eve in 1969, the family moved to Nashville, TN - joking all the way, “I hope there’s room at the inn or we may have to stay in a stable”.
She continued in education until 1978 after which she guided her son through high school, college and his own career in journalism.  After the passing of her husband, she moved back to Amelia, building a home on the same land she grew up on.  She also rejoined Liberty Baptist Church.  Her son Rod says of his mother, “she never stopped teaching”.
She leaves to cherish her memory: her son Roderick Hagwood; one brother Isaac Johnson (Arlene); one sister Julia Johnson; two sisters-in-law, Mary Johnson and Dale Johnson; and a host of nieces and nephews.
