Obituary for Aileen M. Venable
Aileen Marie Venable went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, January 16, 2020. She was born on January 8, 1943 in Amelia, VA to George B. and Mary Madge Ross. She was the 8th of 16 children. In 1961, she married Lemmie Howard Venable. During this union she was blessed with three children, Antoinette Marie Venable-Sims, Anthony Howard Venable, and Jacqueline Lavern Venable. She later raised Nakisha Williams, daughter of a friend.

In 1968, Aileen began her career in Early Childhood Development in Richmond, VA as a Special Education Aide. In 1971, she relocated to Oakland, CA where she volunteered at Clawson Elementary School. She was recommended to participate in a new nutrition program at U.C. Berkeley, where she was known as the “Nutrition Lady”. In 1980, she began working for the Oakland Unified School District as a Yard Supervisor at Ralph Bunche Center for Children with Exceptional Needs. A month later she was promoted to Classroom Aide. She also worked at Manzanita Elementary School and Manzanita Early Childhood Center. She assisted the Special Education Teacher in pioneering the integration of the special need’s preschool programs.

Aileen had many career accomplishments, and participated in many events such as Peaches, and the California Reading and Literature Project. In addition, she served as an Advisor to Special Education Research sponsored by San Francisco University. After 30 years of dedicated service, in 2004 Aileen retired from a field that she loved.

In 1997, Aileen joined Grace Baptist Church in Oakland, CA where she served as an Usher until her health failed. Although her health declined, she didn’t let that stop her from praising God from home.

Aileen was the type of person you could always call and depend on. Her personality was real and heartfelt and will truly be missed. She loved spending time with her family and friends, as family was the center of her existence. She showed courage and determination with a smile that could light up a whole room. Family gatherings will never be the same without her presence.

Aileen was preceded in death by her Parents: George B. and Mary Madge Ross, Daughter: Jacqueline L. Venable, Husband: Lemmie H. Venable, Siblings: Hazel, John, Henry, George, Charlie, William, and Theodore Ross, Mozell Woodridge, Rebecca Gallion (Bob), James Andrew (Ruby), and Elnora Nicholas.
