Obituary for Myrtle O. Hurt
Myrtle Eve Oliver Hurt passed peacefully in her sleep early on the morning of Saturday, July 22, 2017. Her family had gathered the night before where we enjoyed with her a few precious moments of joy. She told her children that she was not afraid and that she was going home to be with the Lord.

Myrtle was born to Hattie Ophelia Jones Oliver (8/22/1876 - 2/28/1960) and Samuel Oliver (8/13/1872 – 7/27/1941) at their home in Burkeville, Nottoway County VA on March 22, 1919. She was the last of five siblings: John Collins (wife Salome), George Astor (wife Milford), Ellen Violet and Samuel Thomas (wife Alice). All departed this life before Myrtle. Myrtle attended Morning Star Elementary School and Nottoway Training School where she graduated in 1936. She acquired her teaching certificate following 4 years at St. Paul’s College of Lawrenceville, VA and continued with periodic summer courses at Virginia State College. She taught in Nottoway County Schools for 40 years(before and after integration) where she loved and enjoyed the love and respect of her many students and parents, some families spanning 3 generations.

She grew up in Morning Star Baptist Church and the Morning Star Community both in Burkeville VA where she formed deep and loving relationships with those who lived and still live there. She lived in Burkeville until the last few years of her life when she moved to Baltimore, MD to be with her daughters.

Myrtle dedicated her life to God as a very young woman. Following in the footsteps of her mother, she played many roles at Morning Star and in the community. Among them were Assistant Church Clerk, Choir Member, Sunday School Teacher and Secretary, Missionary Circle Member, Deaconess, Member of Pastors Aid, and Founder of the Education Committee. As a neighbor and friend she mentored many and was known for her kindness and integrity.

Myrtle married Edgar Lee Hurt (1907-2003), originally from Jonesboro, Arkansas, on July 4th, 1948.  To that union four children were born: Jacqueline Tessa Hurt Thompson, Avis Lynette Hurt Ransom, Cynthia Leigh Hurt Tucker (all of Baltimore, MD) and Sylvester Zimond Hurt (wife Connie) of Burkeville, VA.  They all survive her.  She was blessed with grandchildren, Nedera Tedia Hurt Chapman (daughter of Jacqueline), Makeda Ayana Drake (daughter of Avis) and great grandchildren Cameron Lee Hurt, Marcus Robert Dorsey and Dominic Hurt (sons of Nedera), Cydiera Tinae Drake and Lanaye Sheree Drake (daughters of Makeda).  She loved and was loved by her nephews George Astor Jr., (wife Gwentilyn) Francis Alonzo (wife Denetta), and Michael Tyrone (wife Edna); all three are sons of her brother George Sr.; Reginald DeShon  (wife Alicia), and Kenyon Shalay both sons of Michael; Kalonji Dameek (wife Kelly) and Khalif Ranier (wife Candrice ) both sons of George Jr.; Myesha Jenine, Anita Marie (husband Donovan), Tylia Jacole Threatt (husband Vernon), and Tiffany Danielle, all four daughters of Francis; AviEl Ptav, ElLeion Latif and SoltriEl Ali (sons of DeShon); Jaxxon David and Preston Edward (sons of Kalonji); Lyric Mekhi and Sameera Imani (son and daughter of Tylia); Otis Haston IV and Christian Jaleel (sons of Anita); Jacob Christian (son of Khalif); and Laviyah Aminata (daughter of Tiffany).  It was Myrtle’s wishes that all her descendants be listed in this document by name.

Clara Hardison, Isabelle Royal and Connie Sydnor were among the oldest of Myrtle’s many very dear friends. Myrtle considered hundreds of people to be her very good friends; so many that they could not possibly all be listed here.

Myrtle accomplished much as a daughter, sibling, wife, mother, teacher, friend and hearer and doer of the Word. The evidence of her accomplishments rests largely in the many lives she touched. As a special treat we take pride in sharing as an attachment to this obituary - a passage she dictated for inclusion in the Morning Star newsletter. It is most appropriate at this time.

Funeral Service Saturday, July 29, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Springhill Baptist Church, Blackstone with interment to follow at the Hurt-Oliver Family Cemetery, Burkeville.

W.E. Hawkes & Son Funeral Home of Blackstone in charge of arrangements.
