Obituary for Florence T. Boyd
Florence Elizabeth Taylor Boyd, age 75, was peacefully called home on Saturday March 24, 2018, with her husband of 58 years, Horace Boyd Jr. by her side. She was born on June 10, 1942 to the late Charlie Wilkins and Virginia Epps in Baltimore, Maryland. Florence was raised by her grandparents, the late George and Mary Robertson of Crewe, Virginia whom she loved dearly.

Florence attended Luther H. Foster High School, but left to help care for her younger brothers and sisters after the passing of her grandmother. She began her career working for Dr. James Harris and his wife caring for their children while he worked. She later began working for Levi Strauss as a seamstress, and then obtained a position with Brown & Williamson Tobacco Company in Petersburg before the company moved to Georgia. She returned to school and obtained her GED and became certified as a Nurse’s Assistant. This helped pursue her long time passion in patient care which she truly enjoyed. She worked many years for Heritage Hall in both Blackstone and Amelia, as well as Piedmont Geriatric Hospital in Burkeville, Virginia where she retired.

She joined the Eleven Oaks Baptist Church in Crewe, Virginia at an early age. After marrying the love of her life Horace Boyd, she then joined the Cellar Creek Baptist Church in Blackstone, Virginia. She loved attending services and fellowshipping with her church family. Florence was also an active and faithful member of Bethune Chapter #224, Order of the Eastern Star, Prince Hall Affiliate of Virginia. During her tenure, she served as Worthy Matron of the Bethune Chapter and Chairman of District #12.

Florence loved her family and really enjoyed spending time with them during holidays and celebrating birthdays. She enjoyed baking and was known for her delicious coconut and sweet potato pies, and her son’s favorite caramel cake she always “made from scratch.” In her spare time she enjoyed working on her numbers and playing the lottery, and watching her favorite television show Columbo.

Florence’s memory will forever be cherished by her husband Horace Boyd Jr.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Cynthia Boyd; two brothers, Larry Rosenberg and Tyrone Epps. She leaves to cherish her memory: her husband Horace Boyd, Jr; two sons, Gregory Boyd of Blackstone, VA (Melba Andrews) and Rodney Boyd of Richmond, VA; four grandchildren, Thomas Bragg, Jr., Senethia Bragg, Brittany Bragg and Justin Boyd; four great granddaughters, Sanai Bragg, Alana Boyd, Treasure Bragg and Yesenia Hardy; brother Henry Wilkins; sisters Diane Taylor, Vivian Taylor, Virginia Horne, Brenda Murphy (Larry) and Jacqueline Epps; an aunt and uncle that she was very close to, Vivian Watson and Warren (Norma Jean) Robertson; a very special friend, Esther Fitzgerald; special family friends, Sylvia Fitzgerald and Chad Fortune who were like children to her; and a host of nieces, great-nieces, nephews, great-nephews and cousins.

Funeral Service Saturday, March 31, 2018 at 12:00 Noon at Cellar Creek Baptist Church,, Blackstone. Interment church cemetery.

W.E. Hawkes & Son Funeral Home of Blackstone in charge of arrangements.
