Obituary for Elizabeth C. Mitchell
Elizabeth Laverne Clements Mitchell, daughter of the late Benjamin and Emily Johnson Clements, was born on December 8, 1927 in Amelia County, VA. After battling a long illness, she peacefully departed this life at VCU Hospital and went with the Lord on Monday, March 13, 2017. She was one of twenty-two children.
In addition to her parents, Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband, Moses Harding Mitchell; nine brothers, William, Lynn, Junius, Frank, Floyd, Clarence, Willie, Paul and Carter; seven sisters, Sarah, Mary, Helen, Rosa, Myrtle, Christine and Orabelle.
Elizabeth joined Liberty Baptist Church at a very early age, giving her life to the Lord. She loved singing in the choir, worshiping at revival and attending Sunday School at Liberty. When she moved from the community, Elizabeth was very faithful in her Christian work in Baltimore, MD and in Richmond, VA. After returning to Amelia, she faithfully attended and supported both Liberty and Pleasant Grove Baptist Church….especially revivals and homecomings.
Elizabeth faithfully sent her children to Sunday School and church service until they were grown. She loved the Lord. Her favorite bible verse was… “God is the keeper”. Her faith in the Lord sustained her throughout her life.
She attended Brick Church School and completed her high school education at Maggie L. Walker High School, Richmond, VA where she majored in Beauty Cultural. In addition, she studied Culinary Arts and sewing. Her work career included employment in beauty salons, sewing factories, restaurants and domestic services. Elizabeth was a very compassionate person who loved animals, children, and caring for her family. Roses were her favorite flower.
She leaves to cherish her memories: four children, devoted daughter Delbrah Roena Mitchell of Amelia, VA, daughter Laverne Claudette Mitchell Carroway of Richmond, VA; sons, Douglas Jerome Mitchell and Moses Leon Mitchell of Amelia, VA; two grandchildren, Millie LouAn Elizabeth O’Neal of Washington, DC and Cora Lee Lavern Mitchell of Powhatan, VA; three sisters, Queen Reed (Robert), Katherine Chestnut and Matilda Clements of Richmond, VA; two brothers, Alaska Clements of Washington, DC and Charlie Clements of Alexandria, VA; two brothers-in-law, William Squires and Robert Reed of Richmond, VA; two sisters-in-law, Gladys Clements and Cora Hicks of Amelia, VA; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral Services Saturday, March 18, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Amelia. Interment church cemetery.
