Obituary for Edith T. Hawkes
At 6:25 a.m. on Saturday, December 16, 2017 Edith T. Hawkes, known to many as “Bug”, was surrounded by her husband and children as she peacefully went to be with the Lord leaving many treasured memories with family, friends and acquaintances.

She was born in Amelia, VA on November 9, 1953 to the late William Edward (Phil) Sr. and Mary L. Thompson. She attended the public schools of Amelia County, VA.

Edith accepted Christ as her personal Saviour and chose to have him as the head of her life. She was baptized at Mount Level Baptist Church at an early age.

Edith met and married the “apple of her eye” and love of life Ernest Ray Hawkes of Dinwiddie, VA. They were blessed with two beautiful children from this union.

Edith was a member of the Mount Level Baptist Church in Amelia and attended Shiloh Baptist Church Dinwiddie faithfully where her husband is a long-time member. She retired after 28 years of service from Johnston Willis Hospital as the dietary supervisor. Edith touched many lives with her sweet personality and fashionable style. In her spare time, she enjoyed consignment shopping, line dancing with the “Jazzy Ladies”, and keeping her hair “tight”.

She was preceded in death by her father William (Phil) E. Thompson Sr.; mother Mary L. Thompson; brothers Staff Sgt. Kevin Thompson Sr., Elvis Thompson; sisters Mary Deloris Thompson and Carolyn Wynn; and beloved grandson Reginald Jamil Hawkes.

She leaves to cherish her precious memories: her loving and devoted husband Ernest R. Hawkes of 47 years of Blackstone, VA; daughter Artonda (Dwayne) Cheeseman of Hampton, VA; son Reginald (CaShawn) Hawkes of Crewe, VA; grandson Dwayne Tucker; granddaughter JaCara Hawkes; sisters Phyllis (Billy) Pettaway of Chesterfield, Sharon Thompson (James Jefferson) Thompson of Blackstone, VA; two brothers William “Peter” (Aretha) Thompson, Jr. of Concord, NC, Larry “Man” Thompson, Sr. of Amelia, VA; one great grandchild; two brothers-in-law; three sisters-in-law; a host of uncles, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends; and a special close cousin Charlotte Tabb and close friend Shelia Hines.

Funeral Services Wednesday, December 20, 2017 at 12:05 p.m. at Mt. Level Baptist Church, Amelia, VA. Interment Virginia Veterans Cemetery at Amelia.
