Obituary for Dexter Allen Neal
Dexter Allen Neal peacefully transitioned to his eternal life on October 3, 2016 at his home in Washington, DC. He was born in Washington, DC on December 10, 1942 to John S. Neal and Annie S. Neal.

Dexter graduated from AG Richardson Elementary School, Blackstone, VA and Luther H. Foster High School, Nottoway, VA. He was a proud member of the class of 1961. He was baptized at an early age at Shiloh Baptist Church.

Dexter was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1965 and was honorably discharged in 1971, where he served as a Military Police Officer and received the decorations of National Defense Service Medal Marksmen and M-14 Marksman. He spent most of his military career in Germany.

While in high school, Dexter met and began to date Ann E. Bland. In 1967 they married at Shiloh Baptist Church, Blackstone, VA and began their new life in Washington, DC. Soon thereafter, they had their baby girl Kim. Upon his discharge from the military, Dexter worked at the Library of Congress. On December 31, 1968, he began a new career at Washington Gas Light Company, where he spent the next thirty-one years. He officially retired on February 1, 2000.

Dexter was a very quiet extremely intelligent man who believed in sharing his wisdom. He had a passion for fishing and took pride in owning his own boat for many years. He had a scientific mind and could build or make just about anything. By being a deep thinker and listener, Dexter had innate knowledge about people.

He treasured spending time with his closet friends, including members of his high school alumni, Washington Gas Light co-workers and his many buddies with whom he previously worked. Dexter was a hard worker who for much of his life worked two occupations to provide not just for his immediate family but for his extended family including his siblings, nieces and nephews. Dexter was a true caregiver and because of that we know that he will continue to watch over his family in good and bad times.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ann E. Neal; his parents, John and Isabel Neal and Foster and Annie Belford; brother Tyrone Neal (Geraldine); and father-in-law, Norman Snell.

Left to cherish his memories and lessons are daughter, Kim Neal of Washington, DC; sisters, Beverly Neal-Dorsey of Blackstone, VA and Tammy Carter (Nelson) of Leesburg, VA; brother, Eric Paul (Tammie) of Newburg, MD; mother-in-law, Alice M. Snell of Washington, DC.; and brother-in-law, William Dorsey of Washington, DC.
