Obituary for Connie Ward Barnes
Connie Rae Ward Barnes transitioned to her eternal home on October 18, 2017 at 11:00 p.m. at Bon Secours Memorial Regional Medical Center in Hanover, VA. Connie was born on December 31, 1953 at Medical College of Virginia to the late Lorenzo and Gelene Tucker Ward.

Connie was baptized and joined Springhill Baptist Church at an early age. She always enjoyed coming home to attend worship services and other church activities. She worshiped and fellowshipped at the 31st Street Baptist Church in Richmond, VA where Reverend Morris G. Henderson is the pastor.

Connie graduated from Nottoway High School in 1972, then from Southside Virginia Community College, Christanna Campus with an AAS degree in Secretarial Science.

Connie’s employment history includes almost two decades at Dunn and Bradstreet in Richmond, VA until their closure. She then gained employment at Henrico County Department of Social Services as a Human Services Specialist. Connie remained employed there for eighteen years until her passing. She was determined to work in spite of her challenging medical condition. Her employer was very supportive of her and arranged a special schedule and other measures to address her disabilities. Connie enjoyed her work family and deeply enjoyed helping and talking to her clients. Connie’s other work history includes Burlington Coat Factory and Morrison’s Cafeteria.

Connie or Connie Rae was a quiet, mild mannered, humble and loving person. She adored her granddaughter Aaliyah who she called ‘Granny’s Girl’. Connie often expressed her plans to buy this nine month old a ‘Subaru’. She loved her family, neighbors, friends and coworkers. She enjoyed interior decorating, family gatherings, coming home to Blackstone, traveling to Virginia Beach, watching TV (especially Lifetime), detective/law shows and scary movies.

Connie leaves to cherish her loving memories: her husband of thirty-one years Steven Barnes of Sandston, VA; daughter, Celeste Brooks of Richmond, VA; a son Anthony Barnes (Joy) of Richmond, VA; five grandchildren, Aaliyah, Jaden, Isaiah, Zion and Joseph all of Richmond, VA; six sisters, Barbara Briggins of Blackstone, VA, Dr. Rose Bland of Richmond, VA, Denita Coleman (Charles), Phyllis Ward Dangerfield (Calvin), Lorena Johnson and Eunice Pearson of Washington, DC; two brothers, George ‘Tommy’ Graham of Richmond, VA and Michael Ward of Hyattsville, MD; mother and father-in-law, Benjamin and Carrie Barnes of Virginia Beach, VA; one sister-in-law (like a sister) Judith Willis of Richmond, VA; four brothers-in-law, Ervin Barnes (Linda) of Richmond, VA, Michael Barnes (Song), Jeffrey Barnes (Sharon) of Virginia Beach, VA and Goldwood Robertson of Portsmouth, VA; several nieces, nephews, cousins, classmates, neighbors, friends and some special long time friends which includes: Cheryl Cox, Nancy Evans-Branch, Lizzie Stokes, Frances Evans, Gloria Marlborough, Faye Nelson and others.

Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, October 25 from 7 to 8 p.m.
